Feeling unsure? Here's 10 reasons you should attend your next local golf open
Ready to take your golfing game to the next level but feeling that trickle of nerves? Golf opens are a brilliant way to build your confidence, improve your skills, and mingle with like-minded golfers. If you’ve never played at an open but are curious, our annual Opens Week 2026 at Dainton Park may offer you just the opportunity you’ve been looking for…
Local golf open competitions: what they are and why they’re not “just for great golfers”
Can anyone enter a golf open, you ask? Unlike invitational and high-profile golfing events, golf opens are open to everyone. Sometimes, minimum qualifying standards are required, but often you can simply sign up and play.
With something for everyone at Dainton Park, our Annual Opens Week takes place from 7th to 14th June 2026 and features six different competition categories.
These include Mens 4BBB Open, Seniors Team Open, Ladies Team Open, Texas Scramble Open, Junior Individual Open, and Mixed Greensomes Open. You don’t have to be a great golfer – simply up for a great time on the green!
Reason 1:
You’ll play a proper competition round without the pressure of “serious golf”.
Golf opens give you a great taste of formal golfing events, but without the intensity or pressure. At Dainton, you can enjoy the experience of playing competitively, complete with real rules and challenges. You can win prizes (although the real prize is the sense of achievement!). And, the atmosphere is much more supportive, less critical, and more relaxed.
Reason 2:
It’s the easiest way to test your game and improve faster.
One of the best ways to look at a golf open is as a learning opportunity. If you’ve been wondering can anyone enter a golf open, the answer is largely yes - meaning you can seize the opportunity to test your decision making, practice your game play, and develop your understanding of structured competitions. Afterall, there’s real experience to be gained, as well as real scoring!
Reason 3:
Friendly formats make it more fun than you think
Helping you to gain experience and confidence across a variety of formats, different golf clubs offer different types of competitions. These can include friendly formats such as Stableford (where you score points instead of counting every stroke), team events (where you play in pairs or groups), and scrambles (where the best ball wins). Less pressure, more fun!
Reason 4:
Team opens are perfect if you’re nervous.
Golf open events often include a range of team-based play, allowing you to pair up with a golfing buddy or a group of players. At our Annual Opens Week at Dainton Park, we are hosting 4BBB, team open, greensome, and Texas scramble events. Each with its own unique play, you can look forward to a fun, sociable, and dynamic competition that suits you.
Reason 5:
You’ll meet new golfers and your game will benefit.
Whereas solo play provides a really great opportunity to home in and focus, team play and open competitions offer a brilliant chance to network and meet likeminded individuals. Perhaps even a new golfing buddy. Our friendly Clubhouse is the perfect place to gather, welcoming members and non-members alike.
Reason 6:
It’s a brilliant excuse to play a course in great condition
If you have visited our 18-hole golf course at Dainton Park before, you’ll know what a gem of a course it is. If you haven’t been before, you’re in for a treat! Set amongst 125 acres of beautiful parkland in South Devon, it was commissioned in 1993 and lends the most stunning backdrop to days on the green.
Reason 7:
Opens often come with great value extras.
Golf opens aren’t just about the golf. Okay, they mostly are. But there are also some fun added extras and incentives too. Entries to our Opens Week in June include a significantly reduced green fee, food, prizes, and access to a well-stocked bar!
Reason 8:
Prizes are a bonus, not the point.
Prizes are a wonderful cherry on the golfing cake. That said, though motivating, they’re not the main goal and they don’t define your success. By taking part in a club golf open, you can really propel your gameplay, from testing your skills and managing your nerves to experiencing proper competition etiquette and structure. What’s more rewarding than that?
Reason 9:
You’ll feel more confident every time you enter.
As soon as you complete your first golf open, you’ll be able to unlock the door to much more confident, experienced play. Simply treat your first open as a great day out, not a trial. Once you’ve completed your first event, every open gets much easier and your play becomes more polished.
Reason 10:
You can turn it into a mini break with a local stay.
One of the best things about golfing is the beautiful locations in which golf courses reside. So why not take advantage of the setting and extend your trip with a mini break? Whether you intend to stay on the course or switch into holiday mode, there are loads of ways you can turn your open event into an open adventure. If you’re not ready to rush off home, at Dainton Park Golf Club, we have a range of accommodation recommendations so you can discover the locale.
