Devon is home to some of the country’s best cycling routes, boasting stunning sea views, lush green rolling hills, and exhilarating country lanes. 

Cyclists flock to the area throughout the year to take to two wheels and enjoy all that the area has to offer. Whether you’re seeking a challenging loop or a peaceful ride, we’ve got you covered. Here’s our guide to the top 5  South Devon cycle routes.

Dainton Park to Stover Country Loop

Key information: 10 miles (1.5-2 hours total, easy to moderate ride, best for hybrid bikes.

Once you reach the trail, expect minimal traffic and easy roads connecting Newton Abbot to Bovey Tracey. Stop off at the beautiful Stover Country Park and take in the beautiful surroundings and diverse wildlife, before heading back to Dainton Park for a bite to eat.

Totnes Riverside and Sharpham Estate

Key information: 16 miles return (2.5–3.5 hours), moderate ride, best for touring bikes and foodies.

For cycling (and wine) lovers, this 16-mile return cycle will tick all of the boxes. The countryside ride begins at Dainton Park and takes you through the beautiful countryside of South Hams. Follow the River Dart to Sharpham Estate, where you’ll have the opportunity to indulge in wine tasting and vineyard views. The route is largely on-road with a few gravel paths. 

Teign Estuary Trail

Key information: 9 miles one way (1.5–2 hours each way), easy ride, best for families, leisure cyclists, and e-bikes

Cycle alongside the River Teign on a flat path starting in Newton Abbot and finishing in Teignmouth, a quaint seaside town. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the salt marshes, riverside wildlife, and pass through some of the most picturesque villages in the area.  It’s one of the most scenic cycle routes Devon has to offer. We recommend a quick dip in the sea at Teignmouth to cool down, followed by fish and chips! If you’d prefer a slightly longer ride, you can return via the same route.

Decoy Country Park

Key information: great for families

Decoy Country Park is a lovely location for little ones. Once you arrive at the park, you’ll find a playground, a peaceful lake, and wildlife trails. A great day out on two wheels or even for a family stroll and picnic. 

Combeinteignhead & Shaldon Circular

Key information: 14 miles (2–3 hours), moderate to challenging ride, best for experienced cyclists and road bikes.

This circular route takes you through some of the prettiest villages in the area, and is the best cycling routes Devon has to offer in terms of scenery. You’ll be able to take in estuary views along the way and other scenery, making it entirely worth the uphill effort at times. Speaking of effort, the circular spans 14 miles and does have some climbs, so be prepared. We recommend stopping off for a break at Shaldon Botanical Gardens.
